RESTLESS

MOTION SENSOR VIDEO INSTALLATION

RESTLESS PREMIERED AT THE ILLUM ART + TECH FESTIVAL AT THE MIDWAY GALLERY 2019

AS WE KNOW, OUR PERCEPTION OF TIME IS CLOSELY RELATED TO OUR EXPERIENCE OF SPACE BUT RARELY DO WE CONSIDER THE INFLUENCE OF OUR PHYSICAL BODY MOVEMENTS IN THIS SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM.  AS INFANTS OUR INITIAL PERCEPTION OF TIME BEGINS TO FORMULATE WHEN WE FIRST LEARN TO CRAWL TOWARDS A DESIRED POINT IN SPACE. WE BEGIN TO REGISTER AND ASSOCIATE THE MOVING OF OUR PHYSICAL BODIES WITH THE TIME SPAN IT TAKES TO GET TO OUR DESIRED LOCATION.  THIS EXPERIENCE REMAINS IN OUR SUBCONSCIOUS AND CONTINUES TO OPERATE FROM THAT LEVEL.

RESTLESS INVITES THE USER TO REFLECT ON THIS ELUSIVE SUBJECTIVE MEASUREMENT OF TIME.

THE TEMPO OF THE AUDIO AND THE SPEED OF THE ANIMATED VISUAL COMPONENTS DISPLAYED ON EACH SCREEN ARE CONTROLLED BY THE VELOCITY OF PHYSICAL MOVEMENT OF THE SPECTATORS IN THE VENUE.  THE MORE RAPID THE MOVEMENT, THE FASTER THE AUDIO-VISUAL PERFORMANCE IS, ALLOWING THE PASSIVE SPECTATOR TO BECOME AN ACTIVE COMPOSER OF TIME. THIS RAISES THE QUESTION:

DOES TIME STILL EXIST IF THERE IS NO(BODY) TO PERCEIVE IT?

ACCORDING TO KANT,  TIME, SPACE, AND CAUSALITY ARE NOT “OBJECTIVE”OR EXTRANEOUS ENTITIES, BUT RATHER, THEY ARE MENTAL CATEGORIES INTO WHICH EVERYTHING IS SORTED. COGNITION IS A MENTAL PRODUCT OF THIS. IT CAUSES THE WORLD TO BE INTERPRETED FROM A SUBJECTIVE POINT OF VIEW, CONTINUOUSLY CHANGING IN ACCORDANCE TO THE RESTLESSNESS OF THE MIND ITSELF.

THE AVERAGE PERSON HAS ABOUT 48.6 THOUGHTS PER MINUTE.

THE UNFOLDING MOVEMENTS OF THE FIGURES ON THE SCREENS REPRESENT THE RESTLESSNESS OF THE MIND AND HOW INTERNAL TIME CAN BE MEASURED BY THE AMOUNT OF THOUGHTS PER UNIT OF TIME.

OCCASIONALLY, THE FIGURE WILL PAUSE(REST) INDICATING THE CONNECTION WITH THE ATEMPORALITY IN THE INNER SPACE BETWEEN THOUGHTS. THIS CESSATION OF THOUGHTS CAN BE UNDERSTOOD AS FREEING THE MIND FROM TIME LIMITATIONS.
